“This was a profound, lived moment for me. I typically hug my friends when we meet and, due to the lockdowns, I hadn’t physically seen one of my friends for about six months. We were coming out of a lockdown period and restrictions were relaxing at a fast pace. We saw each other from some distance, but didn’t know how to greet each other — we hadn’t discussed and agreed what to do, compared risk factors, acknowledged our health and wellbeing, or if we were ‘shielding’ others or not.

I remember the feeling of not knowing what to do, the etiquette unclear, no agreed protocol, but I don’t remember what we actually did, probably a quick and dainty little hug — a nervous and fleeting homage to our heartfelt pre-pandemic hugs, but not the hearty embrace of physical reconnection, and acknowledgement of long friendship, that we so craved.
